Editor,

I want to thank Lisa Diaz Nash for her recent guest perspective about federal cuts to women’s health programs in San Mateo. It is brave and refreshing for a current sitting San Mateo councilmember to express her own views. I admire her greatly. Too many politicians are worried about expressing views that might not be in their best interest come election time.  Everyone should have access to basic health care. Trump’s actions span legal overreach and human rights violations. Just when you think Trump has reached the bottom, you come to realize there is no bottom. I will echo Lisa’s comments. Pick up your phone, call or write your elected officials. March! Our democracy is under attack.

Thanks for your letter, Ms. Quirk, but when you say Trump’s actions include human rights violations, how does that logic work when money is being cut to fund abortions and gender bending surgery? Aren’t those procedures violating human rights you accuse Trump of? Seems to me that potential children and children are under attack. BTW, if folks are okay with violating the human rights of folks opting for those procedures, perhaps individuals can step up and donate their money to make up for the federal government shortfall. But will that happen? I guess we’ll find out.

Whataboutism does not enhance the conversation. It stunts it.

Thanks for your response, Yosemite Says. I’m unsure what your definition is but many definitions say whataboutism is fine when used to expose hypocrisy and faux outrage (in this case against Trump). I would note your accusation of whataboutism isn’t enhancing the conversation either – it not only stunts it, it attempts to shut it down. In the interest of enhancing the conversation, perhaps you can rewrite my comment and educate me on a better approach. I’ll let you know if you’ve expressed my sentiments. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
