Burlingame's community has united to raise money to provide grief counseling for the parents of 4-year-old Ayden Fang, who was killed by a car while on a sidewalk in downtown Burlingame last week.
A 6-year-old girl was also injured in the Aug. 8 crash and was taken to Stanford Hospital. She is expected to survive, according to the Burlingame Police Department.
The vehicle that killed Fang was struck by an e-bike while exiting a parking lot and subsequently accelerated across the street, onto the sidewalk and into the Truffle Poke Bar restaurant, police said.
The vehicle's driver, a 19-year-old woman from San Mateo, has cooperated with investigators, according to police. The Police Department does not currently believe that alcohol or drugs played a factor in the collision.
"Ayden's parents would like to express their immense gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this agonizing time," Michael Deng, Fang's uncle, wrote.
Deng said that the family hopes to use "these financial contributions to go towards a greater cause beyond their therapy."
"Some ideas include improving pedestrian safety in San Mateo County or donations to Ayden's school for future generations of children," he wrote. "We will find a way to honor Ayden's beautiful spirit, and we thank you for your support as we grieve."

Was the child killed by the SUV or the driver of the SUV?
If the child had been shot, would we say that they were shot by a gun, or the person holding the gun? Why the difference?
Blaming an object for the actions of a reckless driver was always a questionable practice used by questionable reporters. As was using the word "accident" when "Human Error" is the cause of >90% of all these "acts of god".
We are just starting the era of Autonomous Vehicles, where blaming a vehicle is having a completely different meaning.
If reporters want to stay relevant, it's time to learn the difference.
I'm also fairly sure if this crash had been caused by the much safer WAYMO autonomous driver, no one would show mercy. Few would call this an "accident" or "tragedy".
Media would be hammering Waymo, the DA would investigate Google. The AG would go after the self-driving industry.
Every politician would come out of the woodwork DEMANDING more safety.
