Editor,
Coinciding with National Gun Violence Awareness Month, the ninth San Mateo County gun buyback was held in South San Francisco this past weekend.
The purpose of these events has always been to help make our communities safer by reducing the number of firearms in circulation. In total, over 3,200 guns have been turned in since the inception of these buybacks in 2018. On behalf of our small, citizens group, I’d like to thank Sheriff Binder and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office for allowing us to partner with them in their ongoing sponsorship of these buybacks, law enforcement agencies from South San Francisco, Brisbane, Daly City and San Bruno who assisted during the event, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors for their continued support and most importantly, the many attendees from across our county who participated. It is our belief that if only one life can be saved by a gun buyback, it is worth all the effort.

Al - did anyone tally the number of firearms turned in by criminals and those with criminal intent? It appears that most of the items turned in were by law abiding citizens leaving them as a group more vulnerable to those who kept their weapons.
Dirk, there you go again asking for facts and foundation to support the success conclusion. BTW, criminals are celebrating knowing that all law abiding homeowners have surrendered their arms.
Dirk, good observation. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if operable firearms are turned in by criminals who may have committed crimes using said firearms. It’s a way to destroy evidence, legally, while also being rewarded. As for law abiding citizens, I wouldn’t be too worried. Between 10 and 15 million new firearms are purchased each year, legally. Who knows how many ghost guns are sold. BTW, more often than not, I hear of folks turning in inoperable guns for the money to buy an operable firearm.
From inside your home, you should be allowed to stop, and if necessary, kill any intruder!
The logic of these "Gun Buyback" glazers is very low IQ. A gun isn't going to jump up and turn into an AI robot and hurt somebody. What you are implying is that citizens are too irresponsible or evil to own guns and you should just give it away because you cant be trusted. Less registered guns DOES NOT equate to less crime/violence and anybody pushing that lie should be ashamed of themselves. You are the enemy - you are essentially an advocate for criminals. California laws treat us like we are children that need safety scissors to function. You can always use a fireplace poker or a baseball bat to defend yourself in a home invasion and then call the cops after your property is gone and you are on the brink of death. As a victim of gun violence on two occasions - I think everyone should have the right to carry anything they want to defend themselves. We are less civilized now in America than the Wild West days - and back then everyone had a big iron on their hip. So what is the real problem? Its certainly not the guns.
