Last Friday on Pride Night at Oracle Park in San Francisco, three Giants pitchers inscribed an anti-gay Bible verse on their Pride caps, and a fourth declined to wear the cap. Major League Baseball slapped the players on the wrist, citing this discriminatory act as a uniform violation. The Giants issued a milquetoast apology, but the message from that evening to our LGBTQ+ neighbors and the people who support them is clear.
The Trevor Project’s 2024 National Survey found that 39% of LGBTQ+ youth considered suicide that year, and some of those kids were in Oracle Park. These youth came to watch good baseball and celebrate inclusion. Instead, the team’s players told them they did not belong.
The excuse of “no hate, just my beliefs” has no justification in our community. San Francisco buried AIDS victims while the federal government did nothing. It buried Harvey Milk, who was murdered for his identity and advocacy. San Francisco honors this past by celebrating progress, which the Giants actively undermined with contentious culture-war politics.
OK Janet, I can't tell what your doctorate means but quoting the Trevor Project about the psychological state of these youths is a baked in conclusion. The Project does not differentiate between other possible causes of suicide tendencies that are germane to all youths. Hammering on the uniqueness of your community is a turn off for many, hence their refusal to wear these caps. Has it occurred to you that seeing these rainbow colors on a cap can be objectionable to others?
HFAB - please be accurate, "white democrats" were offended by blacks. The republicans fought the Civil War for the freedom of black people. It was democrats like Senator Robert Byrd who wore those wonderful white outfits and tied blacks to the backs of vehicles while Hillary Clinton said "Robert was my mentor."
No HFAB - you are twisting the intent of my comment. Not liking a rainbow flag on a baseball cap is not the same as not liking black or gay baseball players or what they were forced to stand for. And now you even drag Jesus into it as you pivot to hate and discrimination. Quite a leap and a cheap shot the result of an addled brain!
Janet, I would guess you are in favor of abortion and a woman's choice. All people should be allowed to have their own opinions without individuals like you implying they are wrong or bigoted. Perhaps the high propensity to consider suicide for LGBQT children is due to public education force feeding innocent children the LGBQT agenda? Confusion comes what children being brainwashed, not from a child's natural curiosity. Consequently the blame should be on public education and doctors like yourself.
Include the news media in the blame-game. It repeats what the activists give them. The hat story is a perfect example: the pride people raise the issue and make a news agenda item. Next up is the reaction followed by branding those opposing as bigots or "anti." Works every time. Remember the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and the Dodgers?
The good news is: "Florida AG has launched a civil rights investigation into MLB's warning to Christian pitchers over Pride Night caps'. Missouri is right behind Florida. Like true democrats, MLB shows their hypocrisy by selectively enforcing its own rules. Good luck MLB, perhaps MLB"s anti-trust exemption should be rescinded?
Your way of thinking is that disagreement equals hate, that's ridiculous. The main issue is that the MLB was inconsistent in enforcing their rules. The conclusion is that the MLB is the entity of hate since they only enforced their rules when a Christian was making a statement.
I think the news media helps the "inconsistency" by giving one side more time or space and/or use of biased words. I always wondered why "choice" is restricted to one subject. "Philip's Code: No News is Good News - to a Killer" was a good start to my education about the news.

Kind of like how black baseball players were found offensive to white people?

CAIB - actually it is the DOJ which is looking into it. Our local hero, Harmeet Dillon, is heading it up.
Exactly what is Christian about hate and discrimination? What would Jesus do?
Dirk, both the DOJ and the Florida AG are investigating the issue.
This type of willful ignorance and hatred is anachronistic and harmful.
That's what religion has always been!
