Editor,

I am commenting about the article in the Journal on June 17 titled “San Mateo is poised to reappoint the current Planning Commission chair.” The appointment is for Seema Patel. Your article is not an objective summary of the events at City Hall during the City Council special meeting.

Thank you for calling this out, Ms. Grajewska. I agree the important public comments were not reported in the article but should have been. Such an outcry from the public seems newsworthy.

Mr. Newsom seemed coerced by Adam Loraine into making Seema Patel the first alternate. Wasn’t that odd? Especially since Mr. Horsman quickly resigned. Maybe we need some independent journalists to look into this.

I agree with Ms. Anna Grajewska’s letter.

What continues to get lost in much of the coverage is that more and more residents are now coming forward to share their own personal experiences and interactions involving former City Planning Commissioner Seema Patel.

These are not anonymous rumors or political talking points. They are specific accounts from members of the community who have decided they can no longer remain silent.

When independent voices, many with no connection to one another, begin describing a similar PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR, reasonable people should pay attention.

Dismissing these concerns as "innuendo" or merely the grumblings of political opponents does a disservice to the residents who show courage to speak publicly.

Character, judgment, temperament, and respect for the public are important qualities for anyone entrusted with civic responsibilities.

The growing number of residents sharing their stories only further substantiates the conclusion that Patel is unfit to serve in any civic capacity.

Even more alarming is Patel's continued bond with Amo Lee, who serves as Patel’s campaign manager.

Many residents have not forgotten the Seema-Amo Lee divisive politics, personal attacks, and dysfunction that characterized the recent past.

The prospect of reviving that style of politics is generating justifiable concern.

Public trust is difficult to earn and easy to lose.

Residents are speaking up because they want San Mateo to Move Forward – NOT backwards to the destructive divisiveness of the past.

Thank you, Anna, for calling out these omissions.

In every situation, some people rise to the occasion. Councilmembers Diaz Nash and Cwirko-Godycki demonstrated genuine leadership Monday night by following the statutes the City Council put in place and by respecting the testimony of residents from across San Mateo who shared their experiences with Seema Patel. Many testified that they had been subjected to personal attacks simply because they disagreed with her politically.

Finding ways to sidestep campaign promises and unquestioningly follow directives is not leadership. Equally troubling is the willingness of our community newspaper, the SMDJ, to ignore so many voices in its reporting and commentary.

My own testimony was supported by documentation. A former San Mateo police chief shared her own troubling experience with Seema Patel. Numerous residents—people who undoubtedly would have preferred to spend their Monday evening elsewhere—came forward to recount their experiences of being targeted by her.

I remain hopeful that their voices will eventually be heard. I remain hopeful that those who report on San Mateo’s civic affairs will recognize the importance of fair and balanced coverage. And I remain hopeful that we will one day have a City Council that unanimously enforces the statutes it has enacted to ensure that individuals who engage in this kind of conduct are not entrusted with public office in San Mateo.
