Editor,

I appreciate Peggy Brady’s thoughtful reply (smdailyjournal.com/opinion/letters_to_editor/more-on-san-mateo-parking/article_5eb0195f-5904-4b4b-b3dc-4a317d5526ab.html) — we agree on more than it appears.

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Mautner, but we know that the cost to build housing, affordable or not, is increased considerably by added fees and assessments and mandates for “green” new scam features. Unless those exorbitant costs are addressed, building housing will only become more expensive and out of reach for more people. As for developers, they’ll build whatever you want as long as they make a profit. No parking spots, no problem. Two car garages for every unit, no problem. Units with every “green” new scam feature, no problem. BTW, are there any builders who are not profit-seeking? If so, chances are they’re not around very long.

Yes, thank you Max.

Last night the San Mateo City Council received a presentation that said that many of its garages are largely unused for most of the week. Yet, taxpayers are asked to cover the high cost of construction and maintenance of these facilities. Meanwhile, local businesses are given subsidized permits to park here.

Shouldn't downtown business owners be encouraging their employees to take Caltrain or Samtrans, which both provide regular service downtown???

CA Is Burning

There is no fix as long as the state is run by democrats. It costs $150-$600 per square foot to build a home in Austin Texas and $400-$1,000 in San Mateo CA. Materials cost the same, the problem is regulatory fees, permit fees, CA State FORCED hourly labor costs, regulatory fees, green fees, green requirements, tree hugger attorney fees and impact fees. Fees, fees, fees

YIMBY politicians keep creating these loopholes that get landlords out of their duty to provide parking.

YIMBY politicians like Adam Lorraine, Amo Lee, Nicole Fernandez, Isabella Chu, Chris Sturken, Elmer Saballos, Jeff Gee, etc. oppose bike lanes for children, so their "sponsors" can then use public streets for free car storage.

- Redwood City hasn't built a useful bike lane since 2016.

- San Mateo even tried to take bike lanes down.

The parking discussion is another governmental giveaway that costs our kids the safe bike lanes they need and deserve.

Society is paying, so YIMBY-companies can make a few more bucks.
