Your March 27 editorial about the Horizon facility was right on the money. It should be used in a graduate level government studies program to emphasize the value of good reporting and thoughtful editorials. It also contains a great road map of how better decisions can be made, if there is thoughtful communication and outreach.
Most of the work of city and county government is mundane, boring stuff. For opponents to make the test of good governance to be a measurement of whether one agrees with every single decision, or to stroke fear and anger just to get elected, is unacceptable. We have enough of that from the president.
Making siting decisions for public health is difficult. I support the proposed location of Horizon and do call for better public outreach. Those of us who support the location, or the 90% of us who are open to hear all options well presented without drama, are being disenfranchised by the fear mongering.
I ask county staff and Horizon to provide another public meeting, with the format implied by you in the editorial.
A recent NextDoor survey indicates about 85% of respondents say this is the wrong location for a 69-bed detox facility where the proposed operator Horizon states up to 17,520 Detox Drop-Offs annually, and to happen within 900-ft of an elementary school?
Your data is incorrect. There will not be 17,000 drop offs. It is not a detox drop off site, as was explained on Wednesday. This is a program desperately needed in San Mateo. Out of sight, out of mind is not accetable.
ok Robert, then how many drop offs will there be? and why is this program needed? I think a prudent solution would be to open a miscreant facility in the desert where there are no NIMBY's except for a few snakes, And I am serious, drug and alcohol abusers need help, but they needed to be treated but not in humanity's backyard where children are harmed.
