Lawmakers including U.S. Rep. Kevin Mullin, D-San Mateo, are questioning how demands to the electricity grid — caused by the increasing number of data centers powering artificial intelligence technology — will impact Americans’ energy bills.Ā

In an Oct. 28 letter to several agencies, including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Mullin — who penned the missive — and his colleagues asked how Congress and other entities could work to ensure the costs associated with burgeoning data centers wouldn’t be passed on to households and small businesses.Ā

Not to worry - there is little chance that new data centers will be built in California. Having worked in the high tech business' energy procurement activity, I saw new data centers go to Arizona, Texas and elsewhere, including those of our major banks. The reasons were earth quake vulnerability, high utility costs and, of course, taxation. They are crying wolf just to let you and me know that they are still alive and well, while twiddling their thumbs and paying lip service to energy cost concerns.

What Mr. Mullin conveniently leaves out is that Democrats are the cause of the rise in the cost of living and skyrocketing utility bills. With Mullin’s power usage question and Ms. Papan’s request for water usage of data centers, I’d recommend anyone thinking about opening a data center to go to another state because chances are that any information provided to California will be used to increase water and power rates to these data centers. California’s nanny state is attempting to get their hooks into you so they can extract as much money as possible. If anything, data centers should locate to a state other than California. Perhaps they can build their own energy power plants and sell power back to California, for a price premium, of course.
