It was very sad to see most of the cheerleaders at the San Mateo High School football game last night sit during the national anthem. It was disrespectful and an insult to all who have served this country, died for this country and love this country. The football team showed class and raised their helmets up at the end of the anthem. I was proud to see a few of the cheerleaders continue to stand and show respect to the flag of our country, even in the face of peer pressure from the many who shamelessly sat and leadership who was non-existent.
There are many ways to teach our youth about respect, discrimination, harassment and bullying. Sitting down during the national anthem is teaching our kids disrespect, discrimination and shameful harassing.
Mike - the names of these entitled, sitting girls should be published and forwarded to those institutions that provide scholarships. Clearly, they should never be eligible for the largesse that our country provides for those who appreciate being and living here. Where are the parents of these girls?
Well said, Mr. van Ulden. I’d add that we should include pictures, too. Perhaps their school newspaper? And not only should their information be available for academic institutions, I’d recommend prospective employers take note also. Would any employer want them to promote their brands and business reputations?

Why did they do this? Were they protesting something?
Mike is right on. You wonder who is advising these young girls. Maybe that should be published.
Perhaps they were exercising their right to freedom of speech. Anyone ask them?
