Editor,
There’s been lots of debate, pro and con, about passage of Proposition 50, which calls for redistricting of Congressional Districts in California, on a temporary basis to counter what Texas is doing.
Donald Trump has urged Texas to change their congressional districts to create more Republican seats in the U.S. Congress. Gov. Newsom, here in California, has proposed that we change our excellent districting plan to balance what Texas is doing.
It is unfortunate that we have to change a fair districting system here in California to have fair representation on a national level. Why is this needed? The answer is one that I would give my own children if they were planning on a basketball team. If the opposing team told you they were going to add five new players to their team, but you have to keep your team the same, would you think that was fair? I don’t think it’s fair at all.
If we vote “Yes” on Proposition 50 we will, perhaps, change five seats in California. But the law makes that change only for the next couple of election cycles. With the 2030 census we can go back to the fair districting system which California created as a model for the country. But we can’t do that as long as Texas has changed the rules of the game. It’s not hard to understand this challenge. I say vote “Yes” on Proposition 50.

Thank you r Moody. I feel that we the people who care more about people than power are wakeing up. We are recognizing the Republican tactics and are starting to realize we can win by being true to ourselves.
We have the numbers to stop the madness that is taking place by all the Dollar chasers.
Leep up your good work.
D Gilbrech - you seem to have a warped view of "we can win by being true to ourselves." Why did we just go through a redistricting effort? Was that a lie to begin with?
Mr/ Van Ulden - Because we had warped sense of honor, forgetting that the Republicans have none and cannot ne trusted. I am happy to see that our state will leave it up to the VOTERS and not their State representstives doing an end run.
By all means, protect the Dollar, not the people.
Yes, D Gilbrech - you just reconfirmed my observation. Thank you.
Common sense --- Vote NO
Who's common sense? Vote YES!
Obviously, Rel, people who understand the definition of common sense. Vote NO!
Rel - you have forgotten why the Revolutionary War was started against Great Britain. The Colonists were not convinced that they were adequately represented in London. Those of us who are not lock step Dems like you, now feel the same way. If Prop 50 passes, a large segment of the California population would not be adequately represented. You would have felt at home with those who decided to remain subjects of the King back then. Please fold the Stars and Stripes and unleash the Union Jack at your flagpole.
Well Dirk, our initial founders must be turning over in their grave with the way the Republicans are twisting rules to undermine the will of the people. Republicans are facing the prospect of the people voting them out en masse, so they, mid decade, are changing the rules to stay in power. Don't expect Democrats to sit idly by while Republicans break the rules. And Trump acts like a king ever day he is in office. I don't see you espousing him to pick up the Union Jack.
Folks, methinks we’ve hit the jackpot with a perfect example of the irrational rationalization of the threat to democracy known as Proposition 50. Here we have Mr. Moody describing California’s existing plan as “our excellent districting plan” and “a fair districting system here in California” and “the fair districting system which California created” yet Mr. Moody is willing to blow up this “excellent” and “fair” plan to advocate for an “unfair” party over people plan that is a threat to democracy. Ironic.
Bottom line, vote NO on Proposition 50. Note that folks irrationally rationalizing their actions are sure to irrationally rationalize other actions that you won’t agree with. Count on it. And count on this “temporary” redistricting to be “permanent.”
