Editor,

For a long time I’ve chafed at the editorializing on the Journal’s front page. I’m speaking about the way headlines buttress conservative versions of the news. Take for example Thursday’s blazing “House passes SAVE America Act.” The only thing this Republican measure will do is to make it harder for low-income, working Americans to vote, a fact that is highlighted in the body of the article. A truer headline might be “House passes voter suppression act.” I suggest you read your articles before grinding your axes.

Sorry Lee - the majority of US citizens support this law, and that includes all minorities by a significant margin. What makes you believe that those on the lower economic scale do not have the wherewithal to obtain proof of citizenship? Don't they fly, apply for benefits, have a driver license, enter secure buildings? Your argument is frankly not supported by facts and earlier studies. Don't fall for the claptrap of our local lockstep legislators.

Thanks, Lee Rossi, for repeating the debunked Democrat talking point saying the SAVE America Act will make it harder for Americans to vote. In reality, the measure will make it harder for non-Americans to vote (as written in John Marty’s LTE in support of the SAVE Act) and that’s what we need to ensure election integrity. Don’t be surprised when the next headline is “Senate passes SAVE America Act.” Thank you for your attention to this matter.

As usual, Terence is the only citizen brave enough to tell the truth. The opinion article claims that SMDJ had "an axe to grind", which is hilarious. Anyone with common sense knows the articles, especially the regurgitated AP News articles, lean heavily far left. News to bonehead Bay Area Liberals, this is a 95-5 issue, in my opinion, all around the world. Only completely brainwashed libs, or those who hope to cheat, object to voters showing valid id to vote. It's really quite simple. We have been waiting for years for these "Jim Crowe 2.0" claims to produce A SINGLE voter whose vote was suppressed because they were unable to obtain ID. In Logic and Critical Thinking classes, this should be used as the most common phony "strawman argument". If you don't believe me, consult every Democrat in the 90's.

Mr. Rossi is correct. With existing laws, voter fraud is nearly non-existent. It's already a felony for a non-citizen to vote. What the act will do is turn about ten million people from the polls. Not everyone drives in cars flies in planes, or can track down their birth certificate easily. The estimates are ten million eligible voters will be turned away. Many women don't have ID's that match their birth certificate. What is the push behind this act?

ClashFan - I can't speak for other states, but in California we have the Motor Voter Law. One is asked, when applying for a driver license, under the threat of perjury, if he or she is a citizen? You may be aware thatone does not have to be legal resident of the State. Many illegal immigrants come from countries where laws are ignored and administration is so corrupt that such requirements are laughed at. I have no idea how many of these motor voter types are now voting, but based on my own observation, as a poll worker in Redwood City, it is alarming. Many are illiterate in their own language, let alone in voting for the first time where we assume they are legitimate citizens. Fraud is rampant in our State, I hate to tell you. Signature verification is a joke, further eroding our confidence in election integrity. Just spend time in the election process and see how it can be easily manipulated.. Mind you, not the fault of the local election staff, but the mandatory "tools" they are provided with from Sacramento.

Thank you Mr. van Ulden for your comments. Self-attestation of citizenship status comes down to checking one box. The state; does audit the voter rolls. You and I can only speculate how many lie on it for malicious intent unless we have a copy of the audit. However, there is still no convincing evidence I have seen that shows noncitizen voting is a problem. I see the evidence pointing in the opposite direction. The Heritage Foundation did extensive research on this subject. One can go to their online database and see their findings by year and state and other criteria. For Arizona, they went back 25 years and found 36 cases. Michigan released an audit of their motor vehicle voter rolls last year and found fifteen cases of noncitizens voting in the 2024 General Election out of a total of 5.7 millions ballots https://www.michigan.gov/sos/resources/news/2025/04/03/michigan-department-of-state-review-confirms-instances-of-noncitizen-voting-are-extremely-rare. That's 0.00028%, which are worse odds than getting struck by lightning. The evidence shows we should be confident of our current system no matter what the media is telling us.
