Editor,

NO

Enough is enough . At least 5 petitions going around to raise taxes of all different kind .

Rick Bonilla

Have you read any of them? I hope you recognize that the taxes that people pay are literally what makes much of your life here possible. Because life is not perfect sometimes we need to put some additional money where it needs to be in order to maintain our quality of life experience. Please don’t just knee jerk on these measures.

Thanks for your letter, San Mateo County Citizens’ Climate Lobby youth group, but how does transferring our hard-earned money to union transportation workers help our global warming footprint? Union transportation workers have been operating at 100% capacity for-ever even though ridership has never reached 100%. Since the beginning of COVID, ridership has been at 50% or less yet public transportation has continued to operate at 100%. If lower emissions were the goal, shouldn’t public transportation have ramped down their capacity and their number of union workers to 60% or less? The fact that they didn’t and don’t want to exposes the fact that this sales tax is nothing but a money grab and has nothing to do with emissions.

I’d recommend everyone not sign the ballot measure because it does nothing to save the planet or reduce emissions. Closing down one-third of stations and stopping rides after 9 p.m. will do much more to save the planet than funding ever-increasing union salaries, pensions, and benefits. BTW, as high schoolers, it’s likely you’re not paying for this increased sales tax. How do your parents feel about it? And for high schoolers or anyone working, there’s no law preventing you from donating to public transportation/unions. But will anyone? I highly doubt it.

Perhaps instead of shilling for public transportation unions, the Climate Lobby, adults or not, should focus on pushing for forest and fire management to decrease the severity of wildfires. Those actions are much more effective at reducing carbon emissions than funding public union workers. And for extra credit, convince as many of the 50000+ climate conference attendees to use Zoom instead of taking 400+ private jets and who knows how many public jets to attend a conference to, of all things, lecture everyone else on carbon emissions while they spew carbon to their hearts’ delights.

Terrence, it’s hard to tell what you dislike more. Is it unions? Is it transit? Is it workers? Is it our climate? Need I go on?

Thanks for your response, Mr. Bonilla. Anyone who reads my valuable insights know that I’m for truth, justice, and the American way. Transportation unions are fine, but not unions staffed at 100% providing 50% or less service. Education unions are fine, but not when they're unable to provide a meaningful education for “the kids.” Transit is fine, as long as taxpayer money isn’t wasted to subsidize ever-increasing union salaries, pensions, and benefits for folks operating at 100% capacity with 50% ridership. Mother Nature/our climate are fine, as it has been for millions of years. The climate change green new scam is not fine because although “greenies” virtue-signal when talking the talk, they never do anything to walk the walk.

Now that I’ve answered your questions, how about you return the favor and explain to us why Democrats such as yourself put the welfare of criminals and terrorists over the American people? How come your Democrat colleagues who swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution fail to do so? Why do Democrats want biological males to compete against biological females while invading their safe spaces?

If you want to stick to climate change, why are Democrats complaining about high gas prices when in the recent past, Democrats wanted high gas prices so folks would buy electric cars? How about reports that a French energy company is going to abandon offshore wind projects on the Atlantic coast and instead invest in fossil fuels? How about Sable Offshore restarting their coastal oil pipeline? Need I go on? Trump was wrong in one respect; I’m not getting tired of winning. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Now we must take advice from a bunch of indoctrinated kids? The climate lobby has been rendered a farce. In desperation for attention, we get another attempt to tax us out of existence. Don't these kids realize that they are making living here even more expensive and that they could not afford to live here either when they finally grow up? There must be some guru out there influencing these vulnerable, innocent youths. Likely a limousine liberal.

Rick Bonilla

Dirk, the existential threat here is not taxes, but actually climate change. How long are you guys gonna be so negative about everything that the younger generation needs so that it cannot only survive but maybe actually thrive?

CA Is Burning

Hey Ricky, what happened to global warming? Oh, the planet wasn't warming enough to cause the problems the freaks were crying about, so it was renamed to "Climate change". This way Lucy and Ricky and their ambassadors could blame every weather change into the "climate change" pot of weather. BTW, Ricky there's NOTHING mankind to change the weather, nothing, nothing, nothing. Now that doesn't mean we ALL can't be good stewards of the planet, but whatever mankind does, it will have zero effect on GLOBAL (which is really, really, really BIG) warming or cooling or change. God, not Rick, democrats or crybaby global alarmists is in control.

Dirk van Ulden

Rick - the younger generation is well meant but their oblivious parents, you and I will be held to account once the true charges and purpose are revealed. They are being fooled under the guise of climate change which is an already debunked issue. Mass public transit is to get folks efficiently to their destinations but the greenies have clamped onto it as a caron mitigation measure, which it is not, certainly not at any price.

easygerd

Highway-widenings are the problem of public transportation around here - certainly NOT the lack of funding.

How can Adina Levin be a "Friend of Caltrain" (an organization that wants to stay separate) and a director at "Seamless Bay Area" (an organization that should want to merge all transit organizations into one). https://www.seamlessbayarea.org/aboutus

This smells like political "Astroturfing" - there goes the credibility.

Fact is that SamTrans is 100% funded through previous sales tax measure - by definition they cannot be broke. They would not even need to ask for fees, they could do everything for free.

Almost the same with Caltrain, except Rico E. Medina and Diane Papan sabotaged Caltrain's ridership with their highway-widening project disguised as "HOT Lanes". Jeff Gee is doing the same with his highway-widening project on 101/84 and Rob Newsom is still pushing for highway-widening on 101/92. Both projects even require eminent domain.

Rick Bonilla

easygerd, The important thing to know is that improving mass transit will take cars out of your way on the road. Because our climate and our economy and everything people seem to care about is constantly changing, we need to be making changes to accommodate the needs of the future. Mass transit will be a major part of the way that people move about since the economy that you and your friends have created, doesn’t allow them to be able to afford both a place to live and a car. By the way, you completely misunderstand Adina Levin.

Rick Bonilla

By the way, where is Bob while we’re having all this fun?

Thomas Morgan

No money without consolidation and meaningful reform. Passing a measure is irresponsible and there would likely be service cuts even if passed. Lastly everyone thinks they are to important and will drive or have themselves Ubered to wherever they need to go. Why because time is money (miss a train or a bus it is at least 30 minutes to an hour) and unless you are a young person or retired public transit makes zero sense. Is my boss going to work my schedule around a transit schedule I don't think so.
